Stuart McLaughlin
Chair of the secondary council

“I have been an NAHT member for over 17 years and feel that one of the association’s main strengths is the way it brings together a community of school leaders so that we can shape education and support each other.  In particular, the last twelve months have been incredibly challenging for Heads, dealing with unprecedented circumstances and events. However, the NAHT has provided superb guidance and provided a collective sense of ‘being in this together’ so that we can continue to provide high quality education for the children and young people we serve.”

When I was first appointed as a school leader over 17 years ago, I was advised by my colleagues to join the NAHT. My colleagues said that the NAHT was a superb union providing high-quality services and representation, as well as being a community of leaders who provide a strong voice on educational matters. I have not been disappointed in my membership! Indeed, over the past few years, NAHT has increased its respect amongst the profession and it has significantly further improved the benefits that it provides for members.

I can't thank NAHT specialist support services enough for their very well informed advice when I was looking to explore alternative approaches to accessing pension benefits.Their knowledge of the Teachers Pension system and the willingness to explore a variety of possibilities within the rules combined to provide me with bespoke advice. Definitely, worth more than my

Although I am now in my 25th year of Headship, there are still times when I need to ask for the legal and professional advice provided by NAHT.  In the past year alone there have been two occasions when I have required specialist support in terms of handling difficult parental complaints. The advice provided by NAHT is second to none.  NAHT always responds promptly to any queries (this is vital in order to reduce stress levels amongst members) and their advice is clear and accurate.   Headship can seem a lonely job on occasions, especially when dealing with difficult situations.  Knowing that I can count on specialist advice of high quality is immensely reassuring and has been of great value, both in the past year and throughout my career.

"Over the past year, membership of the NAHT has proven invaluable to me as a school leader. The unprecedented situation was a shock and presented new challenges to me and must have been even more difficult for less experienced colleagues new into post. Throughout the Covid-19 crisis, the NAHT team have been a constant source of calm, reason and good advice. The helpline team have proven to be superb and whenever I have had an issue, they have either offered advice immediately or gone away, found out the facts and called me back before the end of the same working day. The consistency and reassurance offered by Paul, Rob, James and the team in their e-mails has helped me feel up to date and reassured that I am not alone at a time when the job has, at times, felt lonelier than ever. The team have also been excellent in supporting local decisions by heads who know their schools best.  An outstanding effort from a superb union that I am proud to be part of and represent."
